Driven by Devin: 2016 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible

A classic icon has received numerous modern updates in the past decade while still retaining its old charm. This year however… this year the 2016 Beetle has stepped up its game. Big time.

For starters, the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle has brought with it three new color options to its already diverse variety. Silk Blue Metallic, although not new to the Volkswagen brand, is newly placed on the Beetle, while a new Dark Bronze Metallic has been introduced. But perhaps the most exciting color option added is quite unique and spicy…

Habanero Orange Metallic.

This fiery addition is quite orange as you can see below and although it has a reddish tinge, it is certainly distinguishable from Tornado Red. The ‘metallic’ makes it even spicier by adding in metal flakes to make the orange really sparkle. The boldest Beetle color next to Yellow Rush, this color is not for the conservative; while driving the short distance that I did, it attracted quite a few chasing eyes.

2016 Beetle Convertible in Habanero Orange Metallic. Trim: SE, Engine: 1.8T, Wheels: 17″ Turbine, black leatherette interior.

2016 trim levels have expanded a bit, with a Wolfsburg Edition, S, SE, SEL, TDI SE, TDI SEL, R-Line, R-Line SE, R-Line SEL, Dune (special edition coupe model), and Denim (special edition convertible model), and been renamed for clarity.

The 2016 Beetle has been updated both externally and internally. It still pays homage to its classic ancestor with bubbly curves and a happy smile, but has been substantially modernized. A lower and flatter roof line has been established along with a more upright windshield. Paint colors and wheel styles are in abundance, with 17″, 18″, or 19″ sizes offered depending upon trim level. As always, it is available in a coupe or convertible.

The Beetle comes with a 1.8T or 2.0T engine. For those with a greater taste for style, a turbocharged 1.8L with a six speed automatic is offered at a lesser price than its turbocharged 2.0L counterpart (with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG auto), which is for the more speed oriented. Regardless of the engine, the 2016 Beetle is pretty quick and responsive with good acceleration and braking, smooth shifting, and a comfortable ride.

It is worth noting that Volkswagen has introduced a Beetle 1.8T Wolfsburg Edition (listed above). The Wolfsburg takes over as the base Beetle model, while still packing in the features.

The interior of the Beetle remains as clean and simple as ever, keeping true to the Beetle style. V-tex leatherette seating is standard, complete with a leather wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and e-brake. And heated seats! Heated seats come standard at every trim level as well.

The biggest changes to the 2016 Beetle lineup are technology based as Volkswagen has integrated its Modular Infotainment System (MIB II) system and Car-Net connectivity systems -Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink- into 2016 models at SE and above trims. All trim levels, however, now come with either a 5″ or 6.3″ touchscreen, which is cleaner and easier to use than before.

Looking for features standard in all trim levels? Bluetooth, a 8-speaker sound system, USB/auxiliary ports, climate control, power adjustable heated mirrors, cruise control, multi-function display, variable intermittent windshield wipers with heated washer nozzles, and keyless entry are your basic options.

I think it is safe to say that no matter the trim, the 2016 Beetle packs in some serious options and technology. Of course, the higher the trim the wider selection of features, but that’s a different story (and probably a future review). But for now, you’ve read the jist of what the 2016 Beetle has brought to the car game, and it’s quite a bit.

IMG_0689

The SE trim level comes standard with a rearview camera, Car-Net, 6.3″ touchscreen AM/FM/HD radio and CD player with USB and auxiliary, 8-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, voice control, SiriusXM, power adjustable heated mirrors, keyless entry, cruise control, push button start, TPMS, and more.

12th Annual Cars On 5th Show

Where do you go to see the biggest horse gathering in town? Why, the 12th Annual Cars On 5th presented by the Naples Chapter of the Ferrari Club of America, of course.

IMG_5151

By 8am Saturday morning, 5th Avenue South was lined with more horsepower than you’ve ever seen in one block.

The annual show is the biggest Naples has to offer where you can go to see some of the rarest cars and biggest gatherings of one car brand. Supercars dominate the show with classics, imports, domestics, and the occasional bike sprinkled in. And puppies. Puppies everywhere.

We were setup with our partners Audi Naples showing off our beloved Classic Beetle and 1963 Double Cab, a new 2016 Silk Blue Metallic Beetle Convertible, a new 2016 VW Golf GTI manual, and a new 2016 Touareg- all of which you can come see in our showroom!

IMG_4991

There were too many Ferraris, Porsche’s, and Corvettes to count, but several stood out; like this Slant Nose Porsche below, a Porsche 918 Spyder, a green Ferrari 458, a gorgeous white Ferrari Testarossa, a new Ferrari 488, 2 Porsche GT3’s and a GT3RS, several model year C1 Corvettes, and a rare Ferrari 512i BB. While these three brands dominated, Lamborghini was represented well with the showing of a rare 1967 350GT, a new Aventador Super Veloce, a Diablo, a Murcielago, a 50th Anniversario Aventador, and a few others. It’s impossible to point out every sweet car there, but a Koenigsegg CCX, Alfa Romeo 4C & 8C, several Ford GT’s, a 1974 BMW 2002 Factory Turbo, a Mercedes Benz 300SLR, a Noble M400 race car, and a Porsche Carrera GT are some worth mentioning. And we can’t forget the familiar faces of a widebody bagged Challenger and a 1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E Cosworth Edition.

IMG_5038

Vendors from around town and even farther out were set-up showcasing cars including Naples Motorsports, NUR Performance, Lamborghini Sarasota, Naples Luxury Imports, and Black Horse Motors.

As always the show was a hit, drawing in thousands of people, and dare I say, even more were in attendance this year than last! Needless to say, we are already looking forward to next year!

Giving Back: Paul’s Surprise GTI

Today, we were given the opportunity to give back to one of our Marine Corps Veterans. Ted Daly, our finance manager, has a son named Paul who recently returned home from serving his country overseas. Knowing his son would soon be back, Ted had something special in mind for Paul. A few months prior he had placed an order for a brand new Golf GTI Autobahn in Tornado Red, complete with a manual transmission and all of the options a Marine Corps veteran could ever want!

IMG_2510

After Paul got home, his father tricked him into walking in to the shop at Volkswagen of Naples where his new car, along with all of our staff, were waiting for him. We gathered here to thank Paul for everything that he has done, but in true Marine fashion, he made sure to thank each and every one of us with a firm handshake. We would like to thank Paul indefinitely for his service to our country and congratulate him on his new car! Oorah!

Complete Reconditioning at VW of Naples

Did you know that Volkswagen of Naples does full reconditioning? Our service and detail department can take on even the toughest of jobs, as showcased by this VW Passat Wagon:

_MG_2011

Before

When it came to us, it looked like it had been beaten up and left to rot somewhere. The headlights were so hazy they almost matched the paint color. The paint was faded and dull. There were dings, dents and mold everywhere! All of the wheels had curb rash, the interior was a mess, it had a funny smell to it. The list goes on and on..

After a little bit of time, some elbow grease, and a lot of experience and knowledge, we had it looking (and smelling!) like a whole different car!

_MG_3680

After!

We could rave on and on about the great work that our team did on this car, but in cases like this, it’s better that the pictures should do the talking. See for yourself, and if you have a car that needs a little love (VW or other), please reach out to us! We would be happy to get your vehicle looking like new again.

Driven by Devin: The new 2016 Passat

One of the most popular consumer sedans just got a horizontally refreshed design.IMG_6964

Volkswagen has given the 2016 Passat both an external and internal face-lift just in time for the holiday sales season. They have also added the sought after R-Line trim level to the Passat lineup for the upcoming year. Volkswagen definitely has stepped up their mid-size sedan game by not only restyling the exterior, but by also adding a fistful of new features inside.

IMG_6995

One can easily notice the difference between the 2015 and 2016 Passat. VW added more horizontally aggressive lines in the front end, front fenders, hood, rear, and trunklid. Although the new look is still reminiscent of older, more reserved European styling, it adds some desired flare to this family hauler. New options such as LED taillights and headlights are being offered, which is a first among Volkswagen’s sedans. The R-Line will also offer unique rocker panels, a 2016 Jetta GLI inspired black accented front bumper, rear diffuser piece, and 19″ wheels.

IMG_6955

IMG_7018

Moving inside, the look has changed slightly to become more modern and hip. Cloth and leatherette surfaces are still both offered, accompanied by aluminum styled inlays. But the biggest changes are technological. Volkswagen’s Modular Infotainment System (MIB II) system and Car-Net connectivity systems -Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink- now grace the 2016 Passat (they have also been added to others such as the Tiguan). Touchscreens are now standard, but offered in two sizes depending upon packages. The screens also feature a new proximity sensor that bring up controls as your hand gets close to the screen. Backup cameras now also come in all trim levels, including the base Passat S (whoohoo!).

IMG_7011

IMG_7006

If you thought the Passat was loaded with safety features before, get ready to have your socks knocked off. With the refresh comes a bunch of new, advanced, and sought after safety options that are generally offered in more luxurious vehicles (like Acura or Audi).

Some of the new features include:

  • Automatic Post-Collision Braking, which prevents the car from running away and crashing into things after an initial impact (standard on all trim levels)
  • rearview camera (standard on all trim levels)
  • adaptive cruise control
  • a forward-collision warning system
  • autonomous emergency braking
  • blind spot monitor with alerts
  • lane departure warning
  • parking steering assistance

Are your socks knocked off yet? If not, then here’s a little tidbit of information: the 2016 Passat just earned the Top Safety Pick+ Rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), having been given the highest possible ratings of “good” in the institute’s crash tests. “The Passat’s IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award demonstrates Volkswagen’s longstanding commitment to vehicle safety and the development of innovative technologies,” said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc.

IMG_6959

The Passat brings with it the same engine choices from the 2015 model:

  • A 1.8 TSI turbocharged four-cylinder
  • A 3.6L VR6
  • A 2.0L TDI four-cylinder

In terms of gas mileage, Volkswagen has said that the base 1.8L will get around 38mpg on the highway. Less stopping and more driving. And let me tell you this, that little 1.8L is no slow slug.

All of the 2015 Passat color choices (both inside and out) carry over with the exception of a newly named Reef Blue Metallic, which replaces Night Blue Metallic.

Prices for the 2016 Passat start at exactly what the 2015 Passat was, but with this new model, I would say you definitely get more bang for your buck.

Interested? We’ve already had a bunch of these hit our VW of Naples lot, so come check one out today!

Driven by Devin: 2015 Passat Limited Edition

The Volkswagen Passat, regardless of trim level, is a pleasant drive. It gets good gas mileage, handles well, drives smooth, is pretty spacious, and is Volkswagen’s family sedan. It features a 1.8L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that gets up and goes when needed. I drive one of these quaint sedans almost everyday between dealerships, and I must say they make for a quite comfortable daily driver. The current 2015 Passat is offered in several different trim levels; the S, SE, SE with sunroof and navigation, SEL Premium, and a new Limited Edition.

IMG_3643

A limited run, Volkswagen’s 2015 Limited Edition Passat replaces the Wolfsburg and offers a send-off to the current Passat model. A middle ground between the base Passat S and Passat SE, the Limited Edition is designated by a “Limited” badge and offers key upgrades from the S.

IMG_3636

Passat Limited Edition

Perhaps the biggest improvements are the rearview camera (which is uber helpful), the leatherette interior, power driver seat, and heated front seats.

The leatherette interior is a nice luxurious touch to the Limited Edition. A power driver seat is always a plus, as in some cars, I eagerly reach for those controls only to be disappointed by what is a manual seat (although I have owned my share of manually adjustable seat vehicles). And of course, these seats are heated too. Yes, we may live in Florida, but I personally freeze in the 40-degree weather. Since I haven’t lived anywhere but the Sunshine State, I am totally all-in for the warmers.

A rearview camera makes backing up so much easier. I have never personally owned a car with a rearview camera, and although I am a self-proclaimed expert “backer-upper” (yes I made that up, & I always back my car in wherever possible), the aid of a camera would be happily embraced. You cannot completely rely on the camera (please don’t Big Box store shoppers), but it helps for those tight spots, blind spots, and any other problem spots you encounter in reverse.

IMG_3595

The Passat LE also features an updated 8-speaker Premium VIII radio with a CD changer, SiriusXM(c) Satellite radio, Kessy(c) keyless entry, 17″ alloy wheels, a push button start, bright chrome exterior trim, and front fog lights.

IMG_3591

Surprisingly, the added features of the Limited Edition don’t actually cost you that much extra over the Passat S (which are getting hard to find). If I were in the market for a practical sedan, I would definitely consider the Limited Edition, mostly for that rearview camera.

Check out the shots below or come check it out in person! We have plenty Limited Edition Passats in several different color combinations to suite your tastes.

A technology update for the 2016 Tiguan

The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan has hit our lot. In anticipation of the redesigned model to be released sometime in the next couple years, VW spiced up the last year of its first generation charmer.

IMG_00882016 Tiguans

VW’s all-new MIB II modular infotainment system is the first of its kind, and brings a pretty big update to the Tiguan’s technological specs. It involves a larger 6.3″ Touchscreen LCD with improved graphics and the ability to phone-mirror with software like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink.

IMG_0070

All trim levels of the 2016 Tiguan now all come standard with USB and Auxiliary ports and SD card slots, which is a vast improvement over the previous VW specific hookups that required additional adapters for smartphones.

Also standard is a push button start, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and auto-dimming rearview mirror. Higher trim levels also offer navigation, Sirius radio, and a power panoramic sunroof.

These upgrades may not seem like much on the outside, but as far as internal technology goes, they’re pretty major. Plus everyone is using their phones for music and navigation these days. These upgrades make that easier and more efficient.

Check out our website’s inventory to see all your Tiguan options and grab one before they disappear!

Volkswagen brings its A-game to Frankfurt

The week of the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) is here, and the Volkswagen Group was expected to bring big things to the stage this year… The official show starts today, September 17th, but the VW Group had a special press night all to themselves on September 14th, dubbed Volkswagen Group Night. This night tends to be the highlight of the entire show, and VW did not disappoint.

Just in case you aren’t familiar with the brands under the Volkswagen group, they are: Volkswagen (of course), Audi, Bugatti, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche, Skoda, and Seat. With big names like these, you can expect some pretty exciting stuff.

Screen Shot 2015-09-17 at 9.38.02 AM

Debut of the VW Group’s exciting new models

Perhaps the most highly anticipated Volkswagen to debut was the Tiguan. This long-needed second generation update is bigger and lower, putting it more apt to compete with the Audi Q5. Called an “evolutionary redesign,” the new Tiguan features a more aggressive exterior, a MK7 Golf and Passat inspired roomy interior, a host of new tech, and its most efficient engines to date. Engine options include 1.6L and 2.0L 4-cylinder diesels -with a single or twin-turbo option for the 2.0L-, and 1.4L or 2.0L turbocharged petrol engines available in front or four-wheel drives. Also offered is a GTE plug-in hybrid version, consisting of a 1.4L turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor. We honestly can’t wait to see these hit our lot.

tiguanoffroad-01_0

The new Tiguan

VW also released two new Golfs at the show: The Golf GTI Clubsport and the Golf GTE Sport concept. The GTI Clubsport is a street-legal track-focused machine to celebrate the Golf’s 40th birthday that will be postitioned below the Golf R, but putting out about 50 more horsepower than a standard GTI. This hot-hatch is also equipped with a sweet overboost function that boosts the horsepower by 10% for short periods of time, putting it into Golf R territory. Quite sadly, the Clubsport will not be hitting US soil (insert crying face here).

The Golf GTE Sport concept made its first debut in Worthersee earlier this year, but reappeared at the Frankfurt show. It is a potential future model of the GTI with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Inspired by the racing world, the body is made mostly of carbon and cabin room for only two. There are three, yes three, motors in this crazy hatch -two electric with power to all four wheels and a turbocharged 1.6L TSI petrol engine. Being a concept, we won’t see this car (or anything like it) for awhile, but we’re crossing our fingers that it becomes a reality.

VW also released a new Multivan PanAmericana Edition, as Car and Driver called it, “a fancy bike hauler, complete with an electric ramp to load and unload.”

Multivan PanAmericana

Volkswagen Group brands also released some exciting new models:

Audi debuted a few new models at Frankfurt, including the 2017 S4, 2017 A4 Avant, the 2017 A4 Avant G-tron, and a Tesla-competing electric SUV, known as the E-tron quattro.

The S4 (top left), A4 Avant (top right), A4 (bottom left), and E-tron quattro (bottom right)

Porsche released a few models itself: the 911 Carrera S coupe and cabriolet, and the Mission E concept car which is a direct Tesla competitor. The decision to make the concept is expected to be decided by the end of this year, let’s hope they say yes!

Porsche Misson E concept

Bentley debuted its highly-anticipated first-ever luxury SUV, the Bentayga. Bentley went over the top with this one, creating the world’s soon-to-be fastest SUV in production, in direct competition with the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, Range Rover, and Audi Q7. This thing boasts a huge W12 engine that puts out a whopping 600hp and a 0-60 time of 4 seconds flat at 187mph (301km/h). Bentley offers up a crazy range of options for the interior including a refrigerator in the trunk and a custom in-dash diamond and solid gold clock. Um. Anyway, this SUV isn’t all about pampered luxury; it’s built to go off-road with controls for specific surfaces and hill descent control. We’re not sure who would take this six-figure SUV out mudding, but hey, you never know.

Bentley Bentayga

Lamborghini released its new Huracan LP610-4 Spyder, causing convertible supercar fans to rejoice everywhere.

LP610-4 Spyder

Bugatti finally debuted its insane Vision Gran Turismo in the flesh -or metal I suppose- that has had the world buzzing. A real-life drivable version of a video game car, this concept is definitely not street legal. It is, however, an important glimpse into the future of Bugatti’s models.

Vision Gran Turismo

Seat released a new Leon Cross-Sport concept, dubbed the “Urban Rebel of the Seat family.” This little hot hatch crossover boasts 269bhp from a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. It also is being envisioned with four-wheel drive, laying down enough rubber to help propel it to 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds. It is expected to compete with the VW Golf R and Audi S3. Unfortunately, we won’t see these in America.

The Leon Cross-Sport concept

Skoda released its new Superb Combi, which is eerily similar to the A4 Avant.

And lastly, the new Ducati Monster 1200 R debuted. Motorcyclists rejoice.

 Ducati Monster 1200 R

The Volkswagen Group did nothing short of impressing the world with its show of models. We can’t wait to see some of these cars come out of (or go into) production and hit lots. Don’t forget to watch the continuing coverage of the Frankfurt Motor Show!

September: National Guide Dog Month

guidedogswalking

Pets are a major part of most people’s lives – even those who don’t own any. It’s human nature to perk up and get excited when you see someone walking with their dog down the street. Every so often you’ll cross a dog wearing a service vest with a message asking that you do not touch.

It is unclear exactly when dogs started to become trained for the purpose of assisting the blind and people with various other disabilities to allow them to live more independently. These days it’s not uncommon to see these service animals at work or at the very least, signs at building entrances allowing service animals to enter.

guide dogIt can cost upwards of $40,000 to raise and train just one guide dog. National Guide Dog month was established in 2008 to increase awareness and as a fundraising effort for non-profit organizations that train and match guide dogs to their human companions.

There are training schools all across the US and the world. You can learn more about these organizations at the International Guide Dog Federation website (click HERE). The closest organization to us is Southeastern Guide Dogs with locations in Palmetto and St. Petersburg, FL. You can learn more about what they do, how you can help, and donate online by clicking HERE.

VW of Naples has always been pet-friendly, and we tip our hats to the exceptional dogs who are more than companions, but also hard workers who never take a day off.
