12th Annual Cars On 5th Show

Where do you go to see the biggest horse gathering in town? Why, the 12th Annual Cars On 5th presented by the Naples Chapter of the Ferrari Club of America, of course.


By 8am Saturday morning, 5th Avenue South was lined with more horsepower than you’ve ever seen in one block.

The annual show is the biggest Naples has to offer where you can go to see some of the rarest cars and biggest gatherings of one car brand. Supercars dominate the show with classics, imports, domestics, and the occasional bike sprinkled in. And puppies. Puppies everywhere.

We were setup with our partners Audi Naples showing off our beloved Classic Beetle and 1963 Double Cab, a new 2016 Silk Blue Metallic Beetle Convertible, a new 2016 VW Golf GTI manual, and a new 2016 Touareg- all of which you can come see in our showroom!


There were too many Ferraris, Porsche’s, and Corvettes to count, but several stood out; like this Slant Nose Porsche below, a Porsche 918 Spyder, a green Ferrari 458, a gorgeous white Ferrari Testarossa, a new Ferrari 488, 2 Porsche GT3’s and a GT3RS, several model year C1 Corvettes, and a rare Ferrari 512i BB. While these three brands dominated, Lamborghini was represented well with the showing of a rare 1967 350GT, a new Aventador Super Veloce, a Diablo, a Murcielago, a 50th Anniversario Aventador, and a few others. It’s impossible to point out every sweet car there, but a Koenigsegg CCX, Alfa Romeo 4C & 8C, several Ford GT’s, a 1974 BMW 2002 Factory Turbo, a Mercedes Benz 300SLR, a Noble M400 race car, and a Porsche Carrera GT are some worth mentioning. And we can’t forget the familiar faces of a widebody bagged Challenger and a 1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E Cosworth Edition.


Vendors from around town and even farther out were set-up showcasing cars including Naples Motorsports, NUR Performance, Lamborghini Sarasota, Naples Luxury Imports, and Black Horse Motors.

As always the show was a hit, drawing in thousands of people, and dare I say, even more were in attendance this year than last! Needless to say, we are already looking forward to next year!

Driven by Devin: The new 2016 Passat

Volkswagen has given the 2016 Passat both an external and internal face-lift just in time for the holiday sales season.They have also added the sought after R-Line trim level to the Passat lineup for the upcoming year. Volkswagen definitely has stepped up their mid-size sedan game by not only restyling the exterior, but by also adding a fistful of new features inside.


One can easily notice the difference between the 2015 and 2016 Passat. VW added more horizontally aggressive lines in the front end, front fenders, hood, rear, and trunklid. Although the new look is still reminiscent of older, more reserved European styling, it adds some desired flare to this family hauler. New options such as LED taillights and headlights are being offered, which is a first among Volkswagen’s sedans. The R-Line will also offer unique rocker panels, a 2016 Jetta GLI inspired black accented front bumper, rear diffuser piece, and 19″ wheels.



Moving inside, the look has changed slightly to become more modern and hip. Cloth and leatherette surfaces are still both offered, accompanied by aluminum styled inlays. But the biggest changes are technological. Volkswagen’s Modular Infotainment System (MIB II) system and Car-Net connectivity systems -Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink- now grace the 2016 Passat (they have also been added to others such as the Tiguan). Touchscreens are now standard, but offered in two sizes depending upon packages. The screens also feature a new proximity sensor that bring up controls as your hand gets close to the screen. Backup cameras now also come in all trim levels, including the base Passat S (whoohoo!).



If you thought the Passat was loaded with safety features before, get ready to have your socks knocked off. With the refresh comes a bunch of new, advanced, and sought after safety options that are generally offered in more luxurious vehicles (like Acura or Audi).

Some of the new features include:

  • Automatic Post-Collision Braking, which prevents the car from running away and crashing into things after an initial impact (standard on all trim levels)
  • rearview camera (standard on all trim levels)
  • adaptive cruise control
  • a forward-collision warning system
  • autonomous emergency braking
  • blind spot monitor with alerts
  • lane departure warning
  • parking steering assistance

Are your socks knocked off yet? If not, then here’s a little tidbit of information: the 2016 Passat just earned the Top Safety Pick+ Rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), having been given the highest possible ratings of “good” in the institute’s crash tests. “The Passat’s IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award demonstrates Volkswagen’s longstanding commitment to vehicle safety and the development of innovative technologies,” said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc.


The Passat brings with it the same engine choices from the 2015 model:

  • A 1.8 TSI turbocharged four-cylinder
  • A 3.6L VR6
  • A 2.0L TDI four-cylinder

In terms of gas mileage, Volkswagen has said that the base 1.8L will get around 38mpg on the highway. Less stopping and more driving. And let me tell you this, that little 1.8L is no slow slug.

All of the 2015 Passat color choices (both inside and out) carry over with the exception of a newly named Reef Blue Metallic, which replaces Night Blue Metallic.

Prices for the 2016 Passat start at exactly what the 2015 Passat was, but with this new model, I would say you definitely get more bang for your buck.

October is for Pink and Purple


As many of us are aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer affects about 1 in 8 women in the US every year. Here at Volkswagen of Naples, we show our support by placing giant pink bows on our vehicles and wearing pink shirts to match. We also get involved with various charities throughout SW Florida to show our support.

But October isn’t just for the color pink – it is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is symbolized by the color purple. Pink often overshadows purple, but the numbers behind the colors don’t. Statistics show that 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. The topic of domestic violence is not and easy one to talk about, and for some families it never sees the light of day.

The Shelter for Abused Women and Children in Naples is working hard to bring awareness to the problem and also to the life-changing services that they offer. Below is a list of events being held by The Shelter throughout the month of October to bring awareness, get people talking, and one day put an end to domestic violence.

Volkswagens are Built With Safety in Mind

image1It’s the kind of thing that makes your heart stop; hearing that your son or daughter has been in an accident. You teach them how to drive safely, to always be aware of other drivers and what to do in case of an accident. Although no accident is a good accident, having a safe and reliable car is a good way to stay protected. So when Kim heard that her daughter had been in an accident she couldn’t believe it when she saw the damage. Her daughter was fine and the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SE involved in the crash saved her. She was hit from the side when pulling onto a main road and the Jetta took the blunt of the impact. Quicker, Faster and More Efficient: Our New Service Drive


Our goal is to have every customer get exceptional and fast customer service. We’re constantly trying to find ways to make our processes better, and with that in mind, we have added a new RFID customer recognition system.

What is the RFID system? It stands for radio-frequency identification and it is the wireless use of electromagnetic fields to transfer data to our identifying software. Simply put, this new system has been helping us process incoming vehicles for service, and allows us to add a personal touch. It has been installed for about six months now and our clients are really starting to see the changes. These RFIDs are placed on every service customer vehicle and loaner, as well as every vehicle on our lot for retail sale. This helps identify and locate where a vehicle will or may be. The stickers are place behind the rearview mirror and contain encrypted information. When a vehicle comes through the drive equipped with one, the tag is automatically scanned and decoded. The information pulled from this includes vehicle model, year, customer’s name, exterior color and if the vehicle is a loaner. Service employees receive emails/text messages once a customer arrives, and are able to prepare for their service request before our clients even open their car door. This information is also displayed on a 55” screen in the service drive, showing a list of customers, and some information about our VW Service Advisors. This ensures that we can greet everybody in a more personalized way, and cuts down on hassle and wait time for our clients.

The goal of this system is to reduce cycle time, quicken service in all stages and to make the car more readily available once service has been performed. It also helps us track how long the vehicle stays at each stage; from arrival, technician time, detail, and eventually when it is picked up.


True Ownership: An Intro To Our Long-Term Reviews

Being in the automotive industry the last seven years or so, I’ve had the opportunity to drive almost every car you can imagine. In fact, it’s hard for me to come up with a make or model I haven’t driven. From a 700+ horsepower Werks modified Porsche to a cloth-top Smart car, I’ve been able to experience the very best and the very worst. As my colleague Maraya conveyed in her recent review, our profession tends to take some of the excitement out of a vehicle purchase.

I bought my 2012 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn in March of 2012. I’d like to tell you that I made the purchase for all the more practical reasons Maraya stated in her review. I’d like to tell you that the great fuel mileage, safety features and economics of the matter, steered my choice.  However, that would all be a total lie. Truth is, I saw it sitting on our lot shimmering in Deep Black Pearl Effect paint, and I knew I had to have it. Once I sat in those bolstered leather seats and heard the note of that 2.0T, I was already running the numbers in my head. Was that glorious flat-bottom wheel with it’s contrast stitching worth doubling my existing lease payment and going to a purchase? YES…yes it was. At around $30,000, it was still about half the price of the car it felt most similar to; the BMW M3. A steal I tell you…a steal!

45,341 miles later, I will tell you that buying this car has been the most rewarding vehicle purchase I have ever made. It has a few minor tweaks that make it a little different than your normal MKVI. H&R Sport Springs were installed when it was new, and after all my warranty was chewed up, I did make a change under the hood to squeeze out a little more horsepower and torque. It looks like a car that has seen some commuter service time. A few dings on the hood, and a couple of scuffs on the rear bumper (kids, please don’t text and drive).  After all this time, I still LOVE driving the car. In fact, even when I move onto something newer, this GTI will still remain in my driveway. I’ve heard way too many stories of people who gave up on the car they love, only to have it haunt them the remainder of their days. Besides, my wife would kill me if I got rid of it and it’s never (knock on wood) given me any trouble.

If you follow along with our Facebook Page, this particular car won’t be new to you. I’ve had an unhealthy obsession with seeing what (or how much of something) I can fit into the hatch for years. A 55-inch TV still in the box, nine sets of golf clubs, 22 bags of mulch, outside seating…I’ve done it all. It is the most versatile car I have ever owned.  Need it to act like a pick-up truck Saturday morning, then race over to Lauderdale for a night away with four friends? No problem! It’s the navy blazer of cars…good for any occasion. The GTI is surprisingly quick and gets me about 31MPG on my mostly highway commute. I really couldn’t ask for much more…well, except for maybe a new set of wheels. Hopefully more on that to come soon…

It is our goal to give you a different look at what ownership of a Volkswagen entails; over many months or even several years. Volkswagen and the World Cup

Although Volkswagen isn’t the sponsor of the World Cup I can guarantee you that you have seen previews of the new 2015 Golf GTI a time or two during commercial breaks or after a goal has been scored. Not only are they fun commercials but the Golf Celebration Videos are customized each time a goal is made. The colors of the Golf Celebration videos always match the country that scored a goal and instead of the usual “gooooooooal” the celebratory cry turns into “goooooooolf.” This unique campaign offers something unlike anything seen before, it’s interactive, unique and you can even follow @VW on Twitter to get informed every time a goal is scored.

There was a lot of work, skill and thought that was put into this. Can you imagine how many videos were created to coincide with the winning team? There are roughly nine variations of the original video and thirty-two versions that are assigned to team colors. That’s two-hundred and eight-eight videos in total. Each country has about nine videos each; it would get pretty boring to see the same video every time a team is on a winning streak.
