Volkswagen of Naples Reports VW Revs Up Profits and Pressure on GM

As annual profits go, Volkswagen hit it out of the park, as reported this week by CNBC.com News.

In fact, the record profit the German automaker announced at its annual meeting on Monday will have a lot of people wondering why it made nearly triple the amount of money GM did last year Overall, VW posted a net profit of $20.1 billion dollars with annual revenue surging 26% to $207.1 billion. Yes, some of the VW profit was helped by a revaluation gain on the options it holds to buy a remaining 50.1% of Porsche. Still, the staggering 58% jump in operating profits shows just how successful last year was for VW.

Compare those figures with General Motors. GM made $7.6 billion last year. By all accounts, it was a fantastic year for GM, especially coming just two years after bankruptcy. But with VW breathing nipping at the heels of GM to become the world’s largest automaker, its worth comparing GM and VW. And for that, one figure stands out. In 2011, VW made approximately $55 million every day while GM made approximately $21 million.

So why the difference? Both automakers are racking up sizable profits in China. And while GM made the bulk of its money in the U.S., VW continues to struggle here. By comparison, Volkswagen is still profiting in Europe while GM lost $700 million in that continent. One key differentiator between GM and VW is the strength of their luxury divisions. Cadillac is largely a North American brand, just starting to grow overseas. For Volkswagen, there is a portfolio of strong earnings contributors including Bentley and Porsche. And then there is Audi. It generated more profits for VW than any other brand. Audi’s operating profit last year surged by $2.6 billion.

In 2011 VW sold 1.3 million Audi vehicles around the world. It was the 16th best-selling brand of the year. Cadillac? GM sold just under 200,000 last year, making it the 52nd best-selling brand in 2011. Watch Audi over the next two years. It will be a key player in Volkswagen’s stated goal of eclipsing GM to become the world’s top automaker. In terms of profit, the German automaker has already far exceeded GM.

The Passat, recently named the #1 Family Car for 2012 by Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com, continues to be a success in the competitive mid-size sedan segment with 8,189 units for the month of February.

Jetta sedan remains the volume leader for Volkswagen with sales totaling 11,694, its best February ever. The 2012 Beetle sold 1,303 units. The TDI Clean Diesel Coupe was unveiled this month at the Chicago Auto Show; it will go on sale late summer 2012.

The Tiguan continued strong sales with 2,280 units sold, marking the best February ever. The Touareg vehicles saw an increase in sales with 65.1 percent with 723 units sold.

Volkswagen’s high-mileage, clean diesel TDI models account for 21.3 percent of sales in February, a 54.6 percent increase versus the prior month.

At this year’s Chicago Auto Show Volkswagen announced that a TDI Clean Diesel model of the 2013 Beetle that will be available this summer at Volkswagen of Naples.

The 2013 Beetle TDI is the first TDI Clean Diesel Beetle we’ve offered since 2006, but we think you’ll agree that it was worth the wait. It’s the most fuel-efficient Beetle yet, with a predicted fuel economy of 29 mpg city and 39 mpg highway. Besides its excellent efficiency, what sets this model apart is what’s under the hood.

The Beetle TDI makes the most of Volkswagen’s innovative 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection Clean Diesel engine, which puts out 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. That’s great news for your right foot, because all that extra torque equals substantially more responsive driving.

We don’t use the term “Clean Diesel” lightly. Like our other TDI models, the Beetle TDI features an exhaust system with a particulate filter and no less than three catalytic converters: one for oxidation, one for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and one for hydrogen sulfide. For those of you who aren’t chemistry a major, that means that engine emissions are reduced. For that, we can all breathe easier.

With the arrival of its performance icon to U.S. dealerships this month, Volkswagen announced that it is bringing the all-new 2012 Golf R to a mass audience via an iPad® app.

Created with the enthusiast community in mind, the “Golf R Drivers Forever” app provides access to everything one needs to know about the Golf R. From the history of the popular Golf model and the community that rallies around it, to the focused engineers of Volkswagen R GmbH, this app covers it all.

Told through the perspective of Volkswagen enthusiasts and drivers who helped bring this car to the United States, the app provides an interactive narrative on the evolution of the Golf from its days as the Rabbit in the 1970’s all the way to the present 2012 Golf R model. Filled with exclusive interviews, articles and footage, this is one app all Volkswagen fans will want to interact with.

The 2012 Golf R is the most powerful Volkswagen sports performance vehicle ever sold in the U.S. With 256 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque, the 2.0-liter TSI® engine offers performance and fuel efficiency, thanks to intelligent downsizing. Like the previous R32 models, the Golf R is equipped with Volkswagen’s 4Motion® all-wheel drive system: the latest generation of this system can divert up to 100 percent of the torque to the rear wheels, if needed. All Golf R models sold in the U.S. will be equipped with a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission and come standard with top of the line features including dual-zone automatic climate control, Bi-Xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lights, and unique 18” alloy wheels. For the first time, the Golf R will be available in two-and four-door models.
