#PinkBeetle

596347Volkswagen is always keen on giving their beloved Beetle special treatment, from unique colors to special edition models. The Beetle is their first child, their longest running model, the bubbly bug that everyone knows. Going back to 1934, the development of the first Beetles was underway and ready to sell by 1938, only to have the factory converted for war materials and later destroyed as a result. By 1947, Beetles were being produced and sold to war troops for transportation. Since then, the Beetle has been facelifted, fine tuned, and painted to match the eras.

There have been many special edition Beetle models since the 1970s and VW shows no signs of stopping that tradition. Snapping back to the present day, there are currently two special edition models available for 2016: the Beetle Denim and Beetle Dune.

There has been a long craving for a certain color Beetle, and even if we hadn’t named this article or added the photo above, you could still probably guess the color. You know. Pink. There are photos all over Google of pink colored bugs, and you may have even seen one in person. Dealers have known it. We know it.

“The worst thing you can do for a Beetle is to paint it a plain color,” said Brandon. “They are screaming for color. Every time the dealership is able to get its hand on a colorful Beetle, the model does well.” (Source: VW Newsroom)

Volkswagen credits fans for its new Limited Edition Beetle. Dubbed the #PinkBeetle, VW hopes to start a revolution on social media and among Beetle owners.

The starting point? One woman’s quest to find a pink beetle:

“Brenda Hagar begged a Volkswagen dealer three years ago to find her a pink Beetle convertible or make her one. When he did, she bought it on the spot, sight unseen. She rerouted her flight home from a Mexico vacation to pick it up in Texas, driving all the way home to Oklahoma City in November with the top down to help make room for her and her husband’s diving gear. When she finally reached her hometown, she cruised in her new pink VW down Main Street, exactly five years to the day of being cancer free.” (Source: VW Newsroom)

“For Volkswagen, the idea of the #PinkBeetle has been years in the making… hatched… in the spring of 2014. Dealers from around the country gathered… to discuss what special models might be of interest.” (Source: VW Newsroom).

The concept model debuted at the New York Auto Show in 2015, and was marked to become a reality as a 2017 model car.

“A lot of the dealers said they had people coming in asking all the time for a pink Beetle,” said Kerry Dickson… “The time had finally come for us to embrace what our owners wanted.” (Source: VW Newsroom)

And so, the #PinkBeetle arrives at dealers in October, just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness.

The #PinkBeetle will be offered in a coupe or convertible. It is a vibrant shade of Fresh Fuchsia Metallic over a Pink Club cloth (a match to the GTI plaid, but in pink) with a black and pink accented dash and steering wheel. The pink exterior will be balanced with black mirror caps, black running boards, and either 17″ Linas aluminum wheels or 18″ Twister wheels for the coupe and convertible, respectively.

pink-beetle-3In celebration of our #PinkBeetle and Breast Cancer Awareness month, we, Volkswagen of Naples, will be running a fun campaign to benefit a local charity and contribute to the #PinkBeetle revolution. For the entire month of October, we will be parking our #PinkBeetle all around various spots in Naples for people to view.

In addition, we encourage people to take a photo our #PinkBeetle when they see it: post it on Instagram with the hashtag #PinkBeetle and tag our page @vwofnaples. In response, we will re-post each photo we are tagged in and will be donating in support of breast cancer awareness (a specific place will be chosen soon!).

Spread the word and get in on the fun!

Catching the Desert Bug

Edgy. Flare. Attitude. Tough. Perhaps the most unique Beetle design to date, Volkswagen graced 2016 with a modern street going dune buggy: quite literally, the Beetle Dune.

Built for those who want a hard edge Beetle, the making of the Dune was supposedly inspired by the swarming of the Baja bugs in California deserts during the late 60s.

IMG_0134Most of the Dune is established in cosmetic upgrades, so it’s best that you don’t try to run it in the next desert Baja race. However, it does feature an upgraded and raised suspension -about .4 inches- to add to the dune buggy look.

Cosmetically, the Dune features exclusive black bumpers and air intakes, large rear spoiler, Dune striping, black lower trim that commemorates old buggy running boards, airbrushed silver inserts, black wheel well trim, black and silver mirrors, fog lights, and LED taillights. The car is available in three colors: Pure White, Deep Black Pearl, and a unique Sandstorm Yellow.

IMG_0152

Inside is just as unique. Exclusive cloth and leatherette seating surfaces are a two-tone Dune gray/black with Yellow contrast stitching and piping throughout. Standard tech in the Dune features a 6.3-inch Composition Color touch screen, MIB II infotainment system, backup camera, and Park Distance Control. A special Dune badge sits at the bottom of the steering wheel, and ours was fitted with a Dune Technology Package that included a sunroof, climate control, keyless entry with push button start, and premium Fender sound system. A Lightning Package is also available (ours was equipped with such) that includes Bi-Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, and LED rear license plate light.

IMG_0192

Powered by a 1.8L TSI DOHC 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, the Dune certainly has a bit of pep producing 170 horsepower, but unfortunately lacks all-wheel drive. An automatic trans with Sport and manual modes in the only option available.

IMG_0194If you love this timeless bug, but want a bit of edge and toughness, the Beetle Dune is for you.

Driven by Devin: 2016 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible

A classic icon has received numerous modern updates in the past decade while still retaining its old charm. This year however… this year the 2016 Beetle has stepped up its game. Big time.

For starters, the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle has brought with it three new color options to its already diverse variety. Silk Blue Metallic, although not new to the Volkswagen brand, is newly placed on the Beetle, while a new Dark Bronze Metallic has been introduced. But perhaps the most exciting color option added is quite unique and spicy…

Habanero Orange Metallic.

This fiery addition is quite orange as you can see below and although it has a reddish tinge, it is certainly distinguishable from Tornado Red. The ‘metallic’ makes it even spicier by adding in metal flakes to make the orange really sparkle. The boldest Beetle color next to Yellow Rush, this color is not for the conservative; while driving the short distance that I did, it attracted quite a few chasing eyes.

IMG_0628

2016 Beetle Convertible in Habanero Orange Metallic. Trim: SE, Engine: 1.8T, Wheels: 17″ Turbine, black leatherette interior.

2016 trim levels have expanded a bit, with a Wolfsburg Edition, S, SE, SEL, TDI SE, TDI SEL, R-Line, R-Line SE, R-Line SEL, Dune (special edition coupe model), and Denim (special edition convertible model), and been renamed for clarity.

The 2016 Beetle has been updated both externally and internally. It still pays homage to its classic ancestor with bubbly curves and a happy smile, but has been substantially modernized. A lower and flatter roof line has been established along with a more upright windshield. Paint colors and wheel styles are in abundance, with 17″, 18″, or 19″ sizes offered depending upon trim level. As always, it is available in a coupe or convertible.

The Beetle comes with a 1.8T or 2.0T engine. For those with a greater taste for style, a turbocharged 1.8L with a six speed automatic is offered at a lesser price than its turbocharged 2.0L counterpart (with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG auto), which is for the more speed oriented. Regardless of the engine, the 2016 Beetle is pretty quick and responsive with good acceleration and braking, smooth shifting, and a comfortable ride.

It is worth noting that Volkswagen has introduced a Beetle 1.8T Wolfsburg Edition (listed above). The Wolfsburg takes over as the base Beetle model, while still packing in the features.

The interior of the Beetle remains as clean and simple as ever, keeping true to the Beetle style. V-tex leatherette seating is standard, complete with a leather wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and e-brake. And heated seats! Heated seats come standard at every trim level as well.

The biggest changes to the 2016 Beetle lineup are technology based as Volkswagen has integrated its Modular Infotainment System (MIB II) system and Car-Net connectivity systems -Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink- into 2016 models at SE and above trims. All trim levels, however, now come with either a 5″ or 6.3″ touchscreen, which is cleaner and easier to use than before.

Looking for features standard in all trim levels? Bluetooth, a 8-speaker sound system, USB/auxiliary ports, climate control, power adjustable heated mirrors, cruise control, multi-function display, variable intermittent windshield wipers with heated washer nozzles, and keyless entry are your basic options.

I think it is safe to say that no matter the trim, the 2016 Beetle packs in some serious options and technology. Of course, the higher the trim the wider selection of features, but that’s a different story (and probably a future review). But for now, you’ve read the jist of what the 2016 Beetle has brought to the car game, and it’s quite a bit.

IMG_0689

The SE trim level comes standard with a rearview camera, Car-Net, 6.3″ touchscreen AM/FM/HD radio and CD player with USB and auxiliary, 8-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, voice control, SiriusXM, power adjustable heated mirrors, keyless entry, cruise control, push button start, TPMS, and more.

12th Annual Cars On 5th Show

Where do you go to see the biggest horse gathering in town? Why, the 12th Annual Cars On 5th presented by the Naples Chapter of the Ferrari Club of America, of course.

IMG_5151

By 8am Saturday morning, 5th Avenue South was lined with more horsepower than you’ve ever seen in one block.

The annual show is the biggest Naples has to offer where you can go to see some of the rarest cars and biggest gatherings of one car brand. Supercars dominate the show with classics, imports, domestics, and the occasional bike sprinkled in. And puppies. Puppies everywhere.

We were setup with our partners Audi Naples showing off our beloved Classic Beetle and 1963 Double Cab, a new 2016 Silk Blue Metallic Beetle Convertible, a new 2016 VW Golf GTI manual, and a new 2016 Touareg- all of which you can come see in our showroom!

IMG_4991

There were too many Ferraris, Porsche’s, and Corvettes to count, but several stood out; like this Slant Nose Porsche below, a Porsche 918 Spyder, a green Ferrari 458, a gorgeous white Ferrari Testarossa, a new Ferrari 488, 2 Porsche GT3’s and a GT3RS, several model year C1 Corvettes, and a rare Ferrari 512i BB. While these three brands dominated, Lamborghini was represented well with the showing of a rare 1967 350GT, a new Aventador Super Veloce, a Diablo, a Murcielago, a 50th Anniversario Aventador, and a few others. It’s impossible to point out every sweet car there, but a Koenigsegg CCX, Alfa Romeo 4C & 8C, several Ford GT’s, a 1974 BMW 2002 Factory Turbo, a Mercedes Benz 300SLR, a Noble M400 race car, and a Porsche Carrera GT are some worth mentioning. And we can’t forget the familiar faces of a widebody bagged Challenger and a 1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E Cosworth Edition.

IMG_5038

Vendors from around town and even farther out were set-up showcasing cars including Naples Motorsports, NUR Performance, Lamborghini Sarasota, Naples Luxury Imports, and Black Horse Motors.

As always the show was a hit, drawing in thousands of people, and dare I say, even more were in attendance this year than last! Needless to say, we are already looking forward to next year!

The 2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR has arrived!

This GSR is one of 3500 that will be sold in the U.S. Here now at Volkswagen of Naples!!!

(Source: Volkswagen of America, Inc)

With this new car, Volkswagen has re-interpreted the 1970s GSR for the modern era. The bodyshell of the 1973 Beetle was painted yellow, while the hood, trunklid, and bumpers were finished in matte black. The look was rounded out by black trim strips underneath the side windows and black rocker panels. Yellow and black link old and new: the body and the R-Line® bumpers on the new GSR are predominantly yellow, the hood is mainly black, and the trunklid, roof, and the exterior mirror caps are all black. The new car has yellow/black stripes with “GSR” lettering above the side skirts and a large rear spoiler to complete the look. The stance of the new car is very different, as it rides on 19-inch “Tornado” aluminum-alloy wheels shod with 235/40 tires, compared with the original GSR’s 15-inch steel wheels and 175-section tires, which were quite common even on sporty cars back then. The new GSR also features silver-painted brake calipers.

Then as now, the GSR features a unique interior with a yellow/black theme, sport seats, and a leather sport steering wheel. The new GSR is a lot more sophisticated, however. The black-trimmed leather sport seats and high-grip leather steering wheel both have contrasting yellow stitching, for example. Other interior changes include an R-Line dash pad, a GSR shift lever, a leather handbrake lever, and black floormats with contrasting yellow embroidery. A badge on the steering wheel is marked with the special-edition number (1 through 3500) to emphasize the uniqueness of the car.

Forty years ago, the Beetle GSR had all of 50 horsepower, enough to give it the requisite performance for a sporty compact of the time. But the modern world demands much more under the hood. The new GSR’s 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque enable the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds and to reach an electronically governed top track speed of 130 mph. Most impressively, the engine delivers peak torque from as low as 1700 rpm, giving smooth, effortless acceleration in all the gears. The GSR is standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but a dual-clutch DSG® six-speed automatic transmission will be an option.

Just like its predecessor, only 3500 GSR models will be made—and more than half of those will be sold in the U.S. Since the GSR is based on the Beetle Turbo with Sunroof and Sound model, it comes comprehensively equipped with the Fender® Premium Audio System; a panoramic sunroof; Keyless access with push-button start; Bi-Xenon headlights with LED DRLs; LED license-plate lighting; heatable front seats; Bluetooth® connectivity; a Media Device Interface (MDI) with iPod® cable; three-color ambient lighting; aluminum-alloy pedals; and three auxiliary instruments that include a clock with a stopwatch function and a boost gauge. The Volkswagen Beetle GSR will go on sale in the fall as a 2014 model; pricing will be announced closer to launch.

Volkswagen of Naples Reports VW Revs Up Profits and Pressure on GM

As annual profits go, Volkswagen hit it out of the park, as reported this week by CNBC.com News.

In fact, the record profit the German automaker announced at its annual meeting on Monday will have a lot of people wondering why it made nearly triple the amount of money GM did last year Overall, VW posted a net profit of $20.1 billion dollars with annual revenue surging 26% to $207.1 billion. Yes, some of the VW profit was helped by a revaluation gain on the options it holds to buy a remaining 50.1% of Porsche. Still, the staggering 58% jump in operating profits shows just how successful last year was for VW.

Compare those figures with General Motors. GM made $7.6 billion last year. By all accounts, it was a fantastic year for GM, especially coming just two years after bankruptcy. But with VW breathing nipping at the heels of GM to become the world’s largest automaker, its worth comparing GM and VW. And for that, one figure stands out. In 2011, VW made approximately $55 million every day while GM made approximately $21 million.

So why the difference? Both automakers are racking up sizable profits in China. And while GM made the bulk of its money in the U.S., VW continues to struggle here. By comparison, Volkswagen is still profiting in Europe while GM lost $700 million in that continent. One key differentiator between GM and VW is the strength of their luxury divisions. Cadillac is largely a North American brand, just starting to grow overseas. For Volkswagen, there is a portfolio of strong earnings contributors including Bentley and Porsche. And then there is Audi. It generated more profits for VW than any other brand. Audi’s operating profit last year surged by $2.6 billion.

In 2011 VW sold 1.3 million Audi vehicles around the world. It was the 16th best-selling brand of the year. Cadillac? GM sold just under 200,000 last year, making it the 52nd best-selling brand in 2011. Watch Audi over the next two years. It will be a key player in Volkswagen’s stated goal of eclipsing GM to become the world’s top automaker. In terms of profit, the German automaker has already far exceeded GM.

Volkswagen of Naples shares family values: Volkswagen Passat named 2012 top family car

Kelley Blue Book’s KKB.com names the Volkswagen Passat “Top Family Car”. The Editors at the prestigious website single out Passat as the number one family-hauler, from a field of 10 cars

The 2012 Passat can add yet another accolade to its growing roster of awards: It has been named by Kelley Blue Book’s www.kbb.com as the number-one pick for its 10 Best Family Cars of 2012 list. Each year, the expert editors at kbb.com choose 10 vehicles that they feel address a wide selection of typical familial concerns, ranging from safety, comfort, child-friendliness and favorable consumer ratings to potential out-of-pocket costs during the car’s first five years of ownership.

The Passat—starting at $19,995, with class-leading rear-seat legroom and parent-friendly standard features like Bluetooth® technology and dual-zone climate control—represents a tremendous value for any modern family. And, with the option of a TDI® Clean Diesel engine that gets an EPA estimated 43 mpg on the highway and a range of up to 795 miles when equipped with a manual transmission, the Passat can also be an eco-conscious family-hauling machine.

In naming the Passat their number one pick, kbb.com editors said: “Crafted specifically for the American market—it’s even built in Chattanooga, Tennessee—the 2012 Volkswagen Passat is both larger and cheaper than the model it replaces. But the European driving dynamics and interior feel remain, making the new Passat a uniquely well-rounded family sedan and our best family car of 2012.”

“We’re flattered to have the Passat recognized as the best family car of 2012 by the editors at Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com, a company that is highly regarded by both the automotive industry and consumers,” said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “Such acknowledgement further validates our efforts to make it the first affordable, midsize German-engineered car for the American family. And it’s built in America!”
